I recently analyzed 5 million google search results to learn more about what people click on in the search results and why and it turns out ranking on the first page of google ain’t what it used to be .From my research I discovered that the top three results got about 75.1 percent of all clicks and the number one result alone got 31 percent of the clicks.

However, before you learn these 7 strategies that will help you Rank on Google search, it is important to know these important SEO terms.

The Basics Of SEO – What it is all about

SEO  is a short term for Search Engine Optimization, and is the process of improving the ranking of a website on search engines. The higher your website ranks, the more likely the chances of people  finding the website. While the process has changed substantially over the years, the principles of ranking higher online remain the same. 

Many people think  that SEO is an extremely difficult process that includes years of experience. However, there are many steps you can follow today to improve your website’s online presence. And that in itself is the essence of SEO and why it is so important. 

Talking about SEO actually refers to the growth of organic traffic. Rather than paying to get visitors or customers to your website, SEO allows you to rank higher for the different keywords and topics that are related to your business. This brings customers or visitors to your website for free and hopefully turns them into paying customers. 

There are many different factors that influence this type of marketing online, including publishing on social media, optimization of websites, creation of content and much more. 

Basically, it takes around 3-6 months on the average for you to start seeing results from an SEO campaign. While 3 months is the minimum, after that point, it will likely keep getting better in the 6-12 month period and above. Remember this, SEO is a marathon not a race. Ultimately, it is the combination of all these factors that will show how successful your efforts are.

Understanding how search engines rank websites can be complicated to you, but we can break it down into a few main points that you should consider. Generally, there are three pillars when it comes to search engine ranking results.

These 3 pillars are nothing but discovery, relevance, and authority. Apart from this, websites need to be high quality and be the best source of information for a search result. You can Think of search engines as answering machines.

If you ask a question, Google uses it’s algorithm to find out which website has the best answer to that question. It will then rank those answers in order from the most authoritative on a subject to least authoritative. For you to understand this better, let’s talk about these three pillars of SEO.

The Three Pillars Of SEO You need to know?

  • Discovery
  • Relevance
  • Authority

Discovery:

For you to rank number one for your content on Google, you have to be able to be discovered by search engines. This includes the process of generating off-page discovery such as backlinks, which will create a web of links that point to your site.

While you will learn more on backlinks, for the purposes of discovery, make sure  you get your backlinks from high-quality sites. You will need to optimize your site for certain keywords as well, which will allow Google  find your site for whatever topic you wish to rank for. 

Relevance:

Relevance is the next pillar of SEO. Relevance is a crucial step as it will notify Google if your content and website are relevant in SERPs. Being relevant in the SEO sense is all about building backlinks that align with your website, and having an overall better strategy than your competitors.

In addition, Google will give credit for sites that are well designed, and keep users on the page for longer. So, you need to make sure that your website becomes user-friendly, and  a place for relevant information for whatever you are attempting to be discovered for. 

Authority:

The third pillar, which is the last pillar of SEO, is authority. Authority is a measure of how trustworthy a website is. When your website has higher authority, then it has a good chance and is more likely to rank higher in search results. 

Authority can be determined by two major things, which are: 

  • Age and 
  • Popularity.

Age: is pretty self-explanatory – the longer your site has been around ,  the more authoritative your site will be. 

Popularity: This is more difficult to determine, but is based on factors such as the number of backlinks, social shares, and traffic that visits your Site. This needs a combination of quality content such as blogs posts and SEO best practices such as off-page SEO and technical site optimization. 

Having understood the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), let’s now jump into how you can rank your website in the first page of Google search.

Below Are Seven Top Techniques to help you Rank on the first page of Google Search Results:

#1. The first technique is to find low competition keywords with  explodingtopics.com . Most keywords are super competitive because everyone is using the exact same tools. For example, tools like google keyword planner tools and so on, everyone is typing the exact same keywords into these tools and getting the same exact results.

In order to find untapped keywords that are not super competitive, you need to use tools that no one else Is currently using. And one of my favorite untapped keyword research tools is called exploding topics. This tool surfaces trending topics that aren’t competitive yet and because exploding topics focuses on terms that aren’t mainstream yet you can find keyword and topic ideas that most other tools won’t show you.

#2. The technique number two is to rewrite old content to match search intent. This technique will actually help you rank number one in google for the keyword SEO campaign.

You probably already know that if your site isn’t what searchers want, google won’t rank it even if that page has a million backlinks but if you can align your content with what someone wants you can find yourself with higher rankings for that term.

For example, I published a blog post on my blog a few years ago and  this post was a case study of how one of my readers used a strategy called gestographics to build a bunch of backlinks. Now I couldn’t find a great keyword for that post so I just went with an SEO campaign which wasn’t a perfect fit.

It didn’t really describe the topic of the page but for a while it was good enough and my page quickly hit the top 10 for that keyword and got stuck there for a few months. However, after a while, the google ranking and organic traffic to that page started to drop. I kind of ignored the problem  hoping it would go away: spoiler alert!!! It didn’t !!!

Traffic to my page continued to freefall and that’s when I realized my content was a horrible fit for user intent. I’ll explain. Someone who searches for SEO campaign probably wants to set up an  SEO campaign but my content didn’t give them that and  instead of outlining the steps to setting up an SEO campaign,my post was about one strategy and the use of metrics so google  figured out that my result wasn’t a good fit.

So they ranked me down which is why I decided to rewrite the post from scratch . This time, however, I decided to publish a piece of content that someone searching for SEO campaign would love and within a few days organic traffic to that page started to increase and a few weeks after that, the new version of this post hit the number one spot.

#3. The next technique is ghost posts which is a new SEO technique that I’ve been using a lot lately and it’s working really well. Let’s break it down.  As you probably know, the keyword difficulty scores that you see in most keyword research tools are based on one metric backlinks.  Backlinks are still important for SEO  but are only one piece of the puzzle.  First page rankings which are also based on Organic click-through rate user intent, page speed mobile friendliness, on-page SEO url length, internal links and lots of other factors.

 Most keywords are difficulty scores and instead of using those numbers, I use ghost posts. For example, I wanted to optimize a post around the keyword “Free SEO tools” and according to ahrefs keyword explorer, this keyword is super difficult to rank  and instead of just blindly accepting that number , I  decided to check how difficult the keyword actually was specifically so  I whipped up a quick post and published it on the fourth page of my blog feed.

I didn’t email the post to my list or share it on social media. Hence the name ghostpost.  I  was however amazed to see that my page started to hit google’s first page for long tail versions of my keyword like best free SEO tools and  within about two weeks it even started to crack the top of the second page for my target keyword. That’s when I decided to promote the post on social media and improve the post itself  and as it turned out,  this super hard keyword actually wasn’t that competitive.

As a matter of fact I now rank in the top three for that keyword even though my page has fewer backlinks than the other results on page one with that.

#4. The technique number four is to rank youtube videos in google ranking.  You’ve probably noticed that there are more video results in google than ever before, especially above the fold.

For example I’ve been trying to get my post to rank number one for a target keyword of mine for a few months, now unfortunately I’m still alternating between number three and number four so to get some real stay in that number one spot, I decided to create a high quality youtube video on that same topic and because I optimized my video the right way it made its way to the top spot within a few months.

#5. The technique number five is to target low competition and high cost per click terms. When I used to do keyword research back in the day, I’d focus a hundred percent on search volume so if I saw a keyword with 100k searches a month I’d automatically think that it was a great keyword. Today however, I put a lot more focus on keyword cpc ( cost per click). How much do advertisers spend on those clicks? This is important for these two reasons below:

 First, traffic that comes to your site from High cpc terms tend to convert a lot better after all people are bidding to pay for clicks on that exact term which shows that people searching for that keyword aren’t broke tire kickers but buyers.

Secondly, a lot of high cpc keywords aren’t as competitive as you might think. Let’s say for example,  I created a post recently and optimized around the low competition high cost per click keyword link building services, now this keyword does not reach that many searches, but only about 350 searches in a month with a cpc of 20 bucks a pop.I know that the traffic is made up of legit buyers.

#6. The technique number six is to embed videos in your content. Dwell time is an important factor for Google ranking, dwell time is just the amount of time that people spend on your page before going back to the search results.  The higher your dwell time in general the higher your page will rank in google.

If you want to improve your dwell time, then embed videos on your page. For example, I recently compared my bounce rate on a sample of pages with and without a video and pages with a video had 11.2 percent better bounce rate than pages without a video and that’s when I realized that embedding videos in a post is good  to help you Rank on Google.

Make the video an entire step strategy or tip or as a way for people to learn more about something  you are talking about. On the long run, I found that embedding videos can significantly increase your dwell time.

#7. The technique number seven is to rank in the featured snippet spot. In many ways ranking the featured snippet is actually better than ranking number one. This is because the feature snippet is above the normal search results which is why a lot of people call it position number zero.

Well over the last few months I’ve been running lots of featured snippet experiments and I’ve developed a process that’s helped me rank for dozens of different featured snippets. Here’s how it works:

First identify the type of feature snippet that google’s already showing for that keyword, now there are three main types of featured snippets to keep an eye out for: the definition snippet, the list snippet and the table snippet.

Then try adding something in your page that can fit perfectly inside that featured snippet. Lets say  for example I wanted to rank in the featured snippet for the keyword “nofollow links”, and then I wrote a little section that can fit perfectly inside of a definition featured snippet which helped me rank in the featured snippet within a month.

Now there’s one thing I should point out about this approach, according to ahrefs study, literally 99% of all featured snippets are pulled from results on the first page of google. But if unfortunately you’re not listed on the first page for a keyword, you are likely to have a zero percent chance of getting in the featured snippet. But if you’re already on the first page and want to quickly get to the top of the results this strategy would definitely help.
